Supported Devices

Supported Devices:
  • Xserve with Intel Xeon CPU

Unsupported Devices:
  • Xserve with G4/G5 PPC CPU (use "Xserve PPC" Device Module)
  • Non-Xserve devices running Mac OS X (use "Mac OS X Server" Device Module)

Ports and Protocols

Lithium uses the following TCP/UDP ports and protocols when using this Device Module to monitor supported devices:

  • IPMIv2 (TCP 623)
  • Apple Server Manager (TCP 311)

Device Preparation

Light-Out-Management (LOM) Setup

Lithium uses the Lights-Out Management (LOM) facility of the Intel-based Xserves to obtain hardware monitoring telemetry via the IPMI protocol. You MUST manually configure an IP address for the LOM port as well as a username and password to control access to the LOM monitorinf data. The LOM ports can be configured through Apple's Server Monitor application running on locally on the Xserve.

Apple's LOM setup guide can be found here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304896

The IP address for the LOM port(s) must NOT be the same as the servers network interface(s)

Mac OS X Server Setup

Lithium also uses the Apple proprietary Server Management protocols to obtain operating-system specific monitoring data that is not available from IPMI/LOM. In order for Lithium to be able to do this, you MUST configure a local user with the same username and password as the LOM credentials. When adding a device to Lithium, you specify a single username and password, these credentials are used to obtain data from both the Lights-Out Management interface and the Mac OS X Server monitoring protocols.

You must also create a local Mac OS X user with the same username and password as the Lights-Out Management port(s)

Troubleshooting

Hardware data (Blowers/Chassis/PSU) is shown, but software data (CPU Usage, Volumes, Services) is not.

Check that you have performed the Mac OS X Server preparation as well as the Lights-Out Management IPMI preparation. Lithium obtains the hardware (Blowers/CPU/PSU/etc) data from the Lights-Out Management port via the IPMI protocol, however the operating system data (CPU Usage, Volumes, Services, etc) is obtained through the Mac OS X Server Manager protocols which require a local user account on the server to authenticate against. Because Lithium only allows one username and password to be specified per device, the Lights-Out Management username and password MUST be the same as the Mac OS X Server local user account used to access Mac OS X Server monitoring data.

Software data (CPU Usage, Volumes, Services) is shown, but hardware data (Blowers/Chassis/PSU) is not.

Check that you have supplied Lithium with the Lights-Out Management port IP Address and not the server's network interface IP address. Lithium uses the Lights-Out Management feature of the Intel Xserve to gather hardware monitoring telemetry and to discover the IP address of the server's network interfaces which it will then use to gather operating system monitoring data. If Lithium can not learn about the server's network interfaces it will default to trying to use the supplied IP address to connect to Mac OS X Server's monitoring interface.

No monitoring data is shown.

Check that the IP address, username and password that you have provided to Lithium is correct. If Lithium not showing any monitoring data for the Intel Xserve it would indicate that the server is not reachable by either the Lights-Out Management or the Mac OS X Server Manager protocols. Please ensure you have reviewed the Device Preparation section of this document. You can test your Lights-Out Management, IP address and username and password configuration by adding the server to Apple's Server Monitor application using the same parameters.
